Prostate Cancer Research and Treatment
As the most common cancer in men in the United States, prostate cancer affects thousands of men. Prostate cancer research aims to raise money and awareness to contribute towards improving treatment and finding a cure or cures for this disease.
Prostate cancer is extremely rare in men under 45, it commonly affects men in their 50′s and is most often diagnosed in men in their 70′s. As it is a cancer that specifically affects older men, it often goes undetected as it can have no symptoms in the early stages or the symptoms are unnoticed, or put down to ‘old age’.
As yet there are no cures for prostate cancer, so research looks into this, as well as improving the conditions for men currently suffering from prostate cancer. Research also looks at how to improve the current treatments and how to prevent the cancer from reoccurring after treatment.
The prostrate gland is located between the bladder and rectum and is part of the male reproductive system. The prostate gland is used in the production and storage of seminal fluid.
The current treatments for prostate cancer depend on if the cancer has metastasized (spread) to other parts of the body, especially to the bones or lymph nodes, or not. If the cancer is still contained within the prostate then radiation therapy can be undertaken to kill the cancer cells with x-rays.
A radical prostatectomy can also be performed. This is surgery to remove the entire prostate gland. If the surgery is successful and the cancer is all removed then the likelihood of a recurrence is low. Recurrence of the cancer is slightly higher if radiation therapy is undertaken.
If the cancer has spread outside of the prostate gland then radiation therapy and radical prostatectomy are no longer treatment options. Hormone therapy can be undertaken to limit the growth of the hormone. Research has shown that prostate cancer growth is linked to male hormones called androgens.
Androgens, such as testosterone, are produced in the testicles and these hormones can cause the tumor to grow very quickly which increases the risk of the cells spreading. Therefore by limiting the amount of male hormones, you can slow the growth of the tumor. This can be done by medication, although sometimes the testicles are removed to assist the hormone treatment.
The other treatment option is called ‘watchful waiting’ or ‘active surveillance’. This is when no medical treatment is undertaken, however you are closely monitored by your doctor and tests are done to detect any changes in the tumor.
It is hoped that with continued prostate cancer research that treatments will exist and more options will become available, especially to reduce the incidence of reoccurrence after treatment. The eventual aim of prostate cancer research is to find a cure for this deadly disease.

Try typing in prostate cancer awareness in google. That brings up several organizations and research institutes. I think that researches are aware that prostate cancer is the number cancer killer of men (after lung cancer which is the number one killer of both men and women) and there is research being done to find treatments. It’s definitely not as highly advertised as breast cancer, but it is definitely still being looked and researched.

I think you make an interesting point….esp about prostate cancer since all males …if they live long enough will get prostate cancer…and not all females will get breast cancer.
There are about (4) kinds of testicular cancer. It depends which one and how far advanced…but in general…the cure rates have gotten much much better. Lance Armstrong and Scott Hamilton (at Cleveland Clinic Foundation) have helped with that cause a lot. But I bet most males don’t do "self testicular exam" or have an awareness. There are some websites for testicular cancer treatment at tertiary care hospitals….(i.e. Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic etc.)
The most common types of cancer males get are preventable and related to exposure sources (smoking, industrial/chemical stuff etc.). Colon cancer is a big one …yet, men avoid getting a colonoscopy after the age of 50. Obesity has been linked to certain cancers as well. Just look at the diet most men go for and you know why they have the biggest problem with heart disease.
The prevenitive aspect would have the greatest impact for men…yet we are our own worst enemy for that. Men tend to put off and ignore health issues pretty effectively.
Interesting Question you have pointed out!
Thanks for stimulating thought!

Well.. everyone loves boobs. Boobs are fun to look at, fun to play with. Most guys wont even let you play with their prostate, they’re all "UGH, I’m not gay! Get your finger out of my ass!!" Maybe if you guys started acting like your prostate was important, we’d care!

Having survived a bout of breast cancer and coming from a family who has battled several different types of cancer, I too feel like breast cancer gets the most publicity. Nothing wrong with that. Some really business savy women got off their butts and did something, rather than waiting for someone else to do something. Maybe you too should do some research on where you can get involved or how start a foundation to support research for prostate and testicular cancers.

Hey guys. How many of you are as pissed off as I am about the inequities of male vs female cancer research?
It seems like all the support and research money goes to breast and cervical cancer research while testicular and prostate cancer are all but forgotten about. Hell, there are a couple thousand breast cancer foundations but I cant find 1 testicular or prostate organization. They now even have a supposed vaccine to prevent cervical cancer. Wheres the research or development for all us? All I want is some equality in the research time, money, and in treatment. I’ve even called places like American Cancer Society, civic groups, many other non profit organizations nobody wants to do anything to help with this or start an organization. So I wanted to hear all your feedback
