Probably that it is more common than say, Neurofibromasarcoma. I never hear about a fundraiser for the cancer I have and the survival rate is fairly dismal. While breast cancer has a much better chance. Its really for people to feel better about themselves.
I have always wondered the same because it is very rare that anyone dies from breast cancer this day and age. Science has done a good job with early detection and treatment in breast cancer, even more so than with other cancers. And Cancer like Lung, colon, brochial, rectal cancer, etc. are actually far more deadly than breast cancer.
Kyle, its only common because of our diet. We drink to much soda pop here in the USA and do not consume enough antioxidants.
A vegetarian diet for example, cuts your risk of getting cancer by 50%. The reason is because we consume a lot of antioxidants. Vegetables and fruits are the primary staple of a vegetarian diet and they are loaded with anti-oxidants.

Well, it’s currently Breast Cancer Awareness month, so breast cancer is obviously high profile at the moment.
But yes, it does have a higher profile generally than other cancers, and there’s a very simple reason -sheer hard work.
Breast cancer awareness campaigns and BC Awareness Month started as a campaign by ordinary women, most of whom had breast cancer or had lost someone to breast cancer, to raise awareness so that people knew the symptoms, examined themselves regularly, attended their routine mammograms etc. It caught the public imagination, enthusiastic participation and hard work by women made it grow into something nationally, then internationally, recognised (and then big business cashed in).
People have limited time, and choose their campaigns; those who campaign around illnesses are usually concerned with the illness that’s affected them or their family. I know a couple who have a child with a very rare and life-threatening condition (not a cancer). Much of their time is now taken up with campaigning around this condition – fund raising and agitating for more funding for research, more education, more awareness etc. What they’re doing is what what the women who started the breast cancer awareness campaign did. And it’s as a result of the hard work by those women that breast cancer is no longer the automatic death sentence it once was – but don’t lose sight of the fact that in the US an average of 112 women die from breast cancer every day (that’s one every 15 minutes), and in the UK.that average is 33 a day – I don’t have statistics for other countries.
There are awareness campaigns ad months for other types of cancer – but the plain fact is that none has had the sheer hard work put into it that breast cancer awareness has, hard work by people affected by breast cancer and their families.
I agree that awareness needs to be raised about other cancers too.and while I hate ‘competitive illness’ I can see why there is resentment about an imbalance in awareness raising and fund raising.
BUT it does annoy me a little when people complain about the attention breast cancer receives in comparison to other cancers. The solution is not less attention for breast cancer, but more attention for other cancers – and there is nothing to stop any group of people starting a campaign along the lines of the one started by those women who started all the breast cancer awareness. They’d have to be as dedicated and work as hard though
People worked hard to make that happen.
BUT:
Some breast cancer fund raisers use terror tactics, scaring children and ignoring the fact that breast cancer is an older person’s disease.
By the way, DCIS that bolsters the stats considerably in the US is not considered cancer in Canada.
Because WE as Breast Cancer Survivors, and newly diagnosed patients, and their families, we are out there, and we are spreading the word. If you want to spread the word about Bladder cancer, get out there, and do something about it! WE DID
Breast cancer is the “in” social cause to support. It collects a lot of donations and it’s this money that keeps the gears of “research” greased. As long as there’s money to be made in research, the only progress that will ever be made is in the treatment of these conditions. Treatments don’t cure – along with research they’re a perpetual money machines.
Cancer is a disease of a weak immune system. The body fights cancer cells continuously. It’s only when severe dehydration places immense stress on the immune system that cancer is able to develop and spread. We’re not just talking about breast cancer here, we’re talking about all types of cancer. All cancers are the same – it’s the location that gives it it’s particular name.
Cancer can be cured.
The medical profession knows of the curative powers of water, but chooses to keep this information locked away because there’s no profit in prescribing water. The results of over 20 years of research in dehydration and the problems it causes was well received by the NIH (National Institutes of Health). But instead of acting on it, they swept it under the rug in favor of supporting the pharmaceutical industry which earns billions of dollars each year.
Cancer, as well as most other health problems is a very profitable industry. Why would anyone want to lose such a guaranteed source of income?
It’s just a more common form of cancer and a way to raise awareness about it and other cancers. Also, by finding a cure for breast cancer, scientist are hoping to find a cure for all cancers. They have found links of female breast cancer being connected to male prostate cancer. So they are really just encompassing all awareness and funding through one cancer to find a cure or a better way of treating all cancers.
Jasin are you kidding????? Many women die from breast cancer each day. Thanks to the awareness campaign there are more and more women surviving it but there are still many women dying from it. I live in constant fear that every new pain or ailment I get is a recurrence of breast cancer which will ultimately kill me.
I agree that the breast cancer awareness can seem a bit over the top but that is because so many people who have been touched by it in some way have worked hard to get it up there.
All cancer is serious for sure but please don’t knock the breast cancer awareness, it’s not a competition between the difference cancers.
I agree! My brother was just diagnosed with AML(Leukemia). Last month was Childhood Cancer Awareness month….I saw 1 commercial play ONCE! THAT’S IT!!!!! Now today everyone in the football game was wearing pink and they even had awareness ribbons shaved into their hair and pink hairspray! I have nothing against it, by all means, promote and raise money for such a horrible disease! But it’s not fair that the only people who promote for Childhood cancer are St.Jude’s -.- The commercial I saw was a car commercial saying that if you buy a car from them they would donate to pediatric cancer; I don’t remember which car company it was – I think it was Hyndai or something. My brother was diagnosed a week ago and I haven’t seen him since. I never though anything of the subject, but now that my 9 year old little brother has cancer, it’s not fair that they don’t get any promotion!!!! Every cancer should have equal awareness! I love that breast cancer has so much attention(No sarcasm on the “so much” because they get attention even when it’s not October), but I think whenever the month for a particular cancer comes around, they should raise as much awareness as they do for breast cancer!
I’ll pray for dad. I hope he’s ok.
