Renal Cell Carcinoma (Kidney Cancer); Please share your experience or knowledge.?
My mother in law has renal cell carcinoma. I am just interested in others who have either experienced this type of cancer or know someone who has. If you’re willing to share your experience, I would really appreciate it. ![]()
She is maybe 10lbs overweight, never smoked, rarely drinks, exercises and eats pretty healthy. FYI.
I was diagnose with RCC in June of 2000. I was diagnosed with metastatic RCC in October of 2001. I have been fighting ever since. For many who are stage 1, 85% are cured by radical nephrectomy, either open or laproscopic sugery. For metastatic disease, there are many modalities of treatment. Bone Marrow transplant if a suitable donor can be found (sister or brother), Alpha Interferon and Interleukin II, RF ablation, Embolization, Cyberknife, Angiogenesis inhibitors, are all therapies I have been on or tried to be on at one point or another. They all have their own list of side effects and they are different for different people. I have not yet exhausted all the treatment types available. I still work full time and while I am slowed down a little, I appreciate what I have more and take things less for granted.

If it’s stage 1 (localized), radical surgery, chemo and radiation is often curative. If it’s already invasive or metastatic, the results aren’t nearly as good.

Sorry for your news. My Mum was diagnosed with RCC last May. When she was diagnosed she had no symptoms lead a very healthy active life. NEVER smoked or drank a day in her life. It came as such a shock. At first thought they where going to remove the kidney and that would have been the end of it. She had a 5cm tumor on her right kidney. However, they did a ct scan and discovered it had already spread to her liver and lung. Mum had 3 2cm tumors in her liver and numerous ‘spots’ in her lungs. The cancer was VERY aggressive, there was no treatment given as traditional chemo doesn’t work for RCC. They did try her on a drug called sutent but that was a complete waste of time as the tumors had grown SO much by that stage it was pointless. One of the tumors in the liver grew from 3 cm to 12 cm in less than 6 weeks! Mum pasted away 4 months after diagnosis aged 60. It broke my heart my Mum was my best friend. If your mother in laws cancer has not spread she will be highly treatable and will be fine. From my experience and through talking with specialists if the cancer has spread it VERY hard to treat and almost certainly incurable. If you need more info please contact me thru email. x
