Firstly I must apologise on behalf of the Answers community for the worrying and unhelpful answer cut and pasted by another 'top contributor'.

Simple catarrh is a common chronic problem experienced by many people and is not of course a symptom of throat cancer.

There are a multiplicity of causes, the most important one is of course the increased mucous production caused by smoking. This is NEVER going to go away unless you stop totally, and ever then if you have been smoking long enough, even if the problem reduces it may persist at some level for many years if not indefinitely.

It would be a good idea
References :
GP for more years than I care to remember

Cancer of mouth, pharynx and larynx- symptoms:-
* Hoarseness that lasts more than a few weeks.
* Ulcerations, whitish plaques, sores, lumps- anywhere on the lips, tongue, cheeks, throat, and so on -- that fail to disappear within two or three weeks.
* Repeated bleeding from the tongue, cheeks, or throat.
Stop smoking. Consult a physician (pulmonary medicine) to treat nicotine dependence, if so desired.
References :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head_and_neck_cancer
